Walnut Trail Fencing Pilot Program

The City of Walnut is exploring a phased citywide replacement of trail fencing and we want your feedback!
Why the Change?
Walnut’s trail fencing has been part of our community for decades, but the current wood fencing is deteriorating and no longer as durable as it once was.
• Safety hazards: Many sections of fencing are bowing, splintering, or falling down, creating risks for trail users.
• Shorter lifespan: Changes in California’s preservation techniques mean new wood products last far less time than older installations.
• Limited supply: Replacement rails are now smaller, weaker, and subject to long delays.
This is not unique to Walnut, other cities with wood trail fencing are also switching to alternatives.
Why Vinyl?
Vinyl fencing offers a consistent, long-lasting solution:
• Weather-resistant with a 30+ year lifespan.
• Minimal maintenance required.
• Readily available from multiple suppliers.
Samples of the proposed vinyl fencing are installed on La Puente Road at Old Post for residents to view.

Alternatives Considered
The City also reviewed two other options:
Alternative 1: Replace fencing along roadways with vinyl, keep wood in parks and interior trails.
Alternative 2: Remove fencing altogether, the most cost-effective approach with no maintenance.
