Welcome to the City of Walnut

Nestled in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley, the City of Walnut spans approximately 8.9 square miles and is home to approximately 30,000 residents. Known for its rural charm and strong sense of community, Walnut maintains its unique character through a well-defined General Plan. While primarily a residential community, the City is also home to more than 600 businesses.

Incorporated on January 19, 1959, Walnut is a General Law City governed by a City Council/City Manager form of government. The five-member City Council is elected by Walnut residents. Each year, the Council selects one of its members to serve a one-year term as Mayor. The City Manager, appointed by the Council, is responsible for overseeing the City’s daily operations.

City Departments

Under the leadership of the City Manager, several departments work collaboratively to ensure efficient and responsive service to the community:

  • Administrative Services Department
    Manages city-wide administrative functions, including the City Clerk's Office, Human Resources, Risk Management, Public Information, Economic Development, and Public Safety coordination.

  • Community Development Department
    Oversees planning, zoning, and building safety to ensure orderly development and maintain the City’s aesthetic and structural standards.

  • Community Services Department
    Provides a wide range of recreation programs, senior services, youth enrichment, and community events that enhance quality of life for residents.

  • Public Works Department
    Maintains parks, city infrastructure, and oversees public works and engineering projects to support a safe and sustainable community.

  • Finance Department
    Manages the City’s financial health, including budgeting, accounting, and purchasing functions.
